Washington Commanders veteran running back Austin Ekeler will miss the rest of the 2025 season after suffering an Achilles tear against the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night. With Brian Robinson Jr. now part of the San Francisco 49ers, Ekeler’s absence leaves the position very thin and in need of more depth. The Commanders currently have three backs on the active roster, including a promising seventh-round pick, a former sixth-round pick who has yet to play, a third-down back primarily known for his receiving ability, and an undrafted free agent on the practice squad.

According to Adam Schefter, the Commanders have signed Chase Edmonds to the practice squad. The 29-year-old running back is on his fifth team and enters his eighth year in the NFL. The team can elevate Edmonds three times for gameday without penalty, but a fourth elevation requires a promotion to the active roster.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Chase Edmonds to a one-year contract in 2023. He finished as the team’s second-leading rusher in his first season, rushing for 176 yards on 49 carries plus 14 receptions for 81 yards across 13 regular-season games. Edmonds missed four games with an MCL sprain.
The Buccaneers re-signed Edmonds to a one-year contract in 2024. Unfortunately, he missed the entire season with an undisclosed knee injury sustained in training camp.
