It would have been so easy. The Seattle Seahawks have a solid group of edge rushers, but every team could always use one more. Having too many good edge rushers is not a thing, especially when a certain player has proven he can be good in head coach Mike Macdonald's system.
This is the case with Jadeveon Clowney. Is he 32 years old? Yes. Is he not a long-term answer to be a key player? Yes, but he is still good enough to be a disruptor, and he has always excelled against the run. He is a three-down player and a good one.
While he has a history with the Seahawks, having played well for Seattle in 2017, more important is the fact that he recently played under Macdonald and was fantastic. This was in 2023 when Macdonald and Clowney were both getting paid by the Baltimore Ravens.
Seattle Seahawks miss out on Jadeveon Clowney as he signs with the Dallas Cowboys
Jadeveon Clowney would be a productive player for Seattle in 2025, but the team never gave him the chance to be. Instead, the edge rusher will be signing with the Dallas Cowboys.
Dallas needs him more, of course. Jerry Jones foolishly traded All-Pro Micah Parsons, but Jones doesn't know football well enough to understand that moving Parsons wasn't only going to affect the pass rush but the run defense, too.
In Week 2, the Cowboys allowed Russell Wilson of the New York Giants (yes, that Russell Wilson) to lead his team to 37 points and pass for 450 yards. That likely doesn't happen if Parsons is still a Cowboy. It might not have happened if Clowney had already been playing for Dallas.
Still, this isn't about what Jadeveon Clowney is going to do for the Dallas Cowboys, a team no one likes except for Cowboys fans. Instead, the sad whiff of the Seattle Seahawks not signing Clowney.
Seattle edge rushers Uchenna Nwosu, Boye Mafe, Derick Hall, and DeMarcus Lawrence are pretty good, but Clowney would have made the group even better and kept the group fresher. As a one-year rental, he would have been a steal.
Now, let's just hope Nwosu continues to stay healthy, something he hasn't been able to do very well. Lawrence missed 13 games in 2024, and he is 33 years old. If both are able to keep playing, not signing Clowney is not a huge deal. If they do get hurt, missing out on Clowney could be a crucial miss.
