'I can tell you': Richard Keys claims forward was open to leaving Premier League club to play…

Jorgen Strand Larsen was a leading Newcastle United transfer target this summer and more insight in the player’s thoughts have emerged.

Newcastle United made two bids for Strand Larsen, both of which were strongly rejected by Wolves.

The Norway striker only joined Wolves on a permanent basis earlier this summer following an initial loan spell from Celta Vigo.

Those at Newcastle were impressed with Strand Larsen’s 14 Premier League goals last season and were prepared to pay big money to bring him to St James’ Park.

However, Wolves stood firm and Newcastle eventually signed Yoane Wissa to compliment the arrival of club-record star Nick Woltemade.

Interestingly, Richard Keys has shared some insight.

Jorgen Strand Larsen was happy to play second fiddle at Newcastle United

Keys and co-presenter Andy Gray were speaking on beIN SPORTS.

They were discussing Hugo Ekitike’s move to Liverpool. The Frenchman was strongly linked with Newcastle of course but chose Anfield, before Alexander Isak followed him.

Gray was shocked that Ekitike would decide to join a club who would instantly go out and sign a star player in his position.

During the discussion, Keys revealed that Strand Larsen was in a similar boat. The Norway international is said to have strongly considered a move to Newcastle even if he was going to play second fiddle to either Woltemade or Wissa.

“I can tell you that Strand Larsen was strongly considering joining Newcastle on the basis that he would go and play second fiddle, that he wouldn’t start most games but, over a period of time, would make himself maybe first choice striker,” he said.

Jorgen Strand Larsen tipped to forget all about Newcastle United now

Newcastle are unlikely to make another move for Strand Larsen, with their striking situation now sorted.

Indeed, Wolves chairman Jeff Shi has backed Strand Larsen to forget about Newcastle’s interest and move on with his career.

There have been claims that the 25-year-old could be rewarded with a new contract to reflect his immediate impact in the team.

The Norway international missed Newcastle’s win over Wolves on Saturday due to injury but will hope to return soon as they hunt for their first win of the season.
