Commanders' Jayden Daniels suffered knee sprain vs. Packers; status for Week 3 in doubt

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels is feeling the aftereffects of getting battered by Green Bay on Thursday night.

Daniels, who underwent an MRI following the Week 2 loss to the Packers, was diagnosed with a knee sprain, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported, per sources informed of the situation.

Rapoport adds that the injury isn't expected to be a long-term issue, but his status for Week 3 is in doubt. Daniels had a final check-in the with team doctor on Monday, per Rapoport.

Washington faces the Las Vegas Raiders on Sept. 21. Daniels has never missed a start in his young NFL career.

Veteran Marcus Mariota is the Commanders' backup. Last year, the former first-rounder went 34 of 44 for 364 yards and four touchdowns in three relief appearances. Mariota has started 74 games in his 11-year career. His last start came in 2022 with the Atlanta Falcons.

The Packers sacked Daniels four times on Thursday night and hit the QB 12 times. Green Bay didn't allow the dynamic signal-caller to get loose, holding him to just 17 rushing yards, the second-lowest total in his career. The Packers defense held the Commanders to the lowest single-game explosive play rate (3.1%) and success rate (32.3%) of Daniels' career.

Jeff Hafley's defense blitzed Daniels 12 times in Week 2, forcing seven pressures (58.3%) while sacking him twice. The defense held Daniels to three completions on 10 pass attempts against the blitz, a career-low 30.0% completion percentage, and did not allow him to scramble on any of the 12 blitzes.
