Sacked Wilder back as Sheffield United boss three months on

Chris Wilder

Wilder was sacked after Sheffield United failed to gain promotion to the Premier League.

Chris Wilder has been reappointed manager of Sheffield United - just three months after being sacked following the club's failure to win promotion to the Premier League.

Wilder, 57, returns to Bramall Lane for his third stint in charge of the South Yorkshire club after Ruben Selles was dismissed following six consecutive defeats at the start of the season

He has signed a contract until the summer of 2027 and will be in the technical area for Saturday's Championship fixture against Charlton Athletic.

The club's board said: "Following a difficult start to the season, the board felt it necessary to make a change in order to stabilise performances and strengthen our push for promotion.

"While the adoption of a different style of play was pursued with ambition, results have clearly not met expectations.

"Chris Wilder returns with proven leadership and an unparalleled understanding of Sheffield United. We are confident he is the right person to restore momentum, unite the squad and supporters, and deliver the results necessary to achieve our objectives this season."

Selles was dismissed after the Blades were beaten 5-0 at Ipswich on Friday, a result which left them bottom of the Championship with no points.

The board added: "We would like to thank Rubén Sellés for his hard work and professionalism during his time at the club. Responsibility for recent results lies with us as owners, and we remain fully committed to supporting the team and pursuing promotion."

Wilder, who played for the Blades as a defender in two separate spells, had his first period as manager in 2016, winning the League One title in his first season.

The Blades were promoted to the Premier League under him in 2019 and finished ninth the following season.

Wilder left with the club bottom of the top flight in March 2021.

His last spell at United ended with their defeat to Sunderland in last season's play-off final.
