After picking up their first win of the season before the international break, West Ham would have been hoping that they could get another result this time against their London rivals.
However, this was not the case as the Hammers conceded three second half goals and were reduced to 10 men after Tomáš Souček was shown a straight red card for his tackle on João Palhinha.
Yet again pressure mounts on Graham Potter and his side after Saturday’s defeat. Despite that the West Ham boss said that fans need to remain “patient”. Even so, the East London club have started the season with four losses in the league and have conceded the most goals in 11.
So the question will be how patient can the fans be because if it carries on this way then Potter may be out of a job sooner rather than later.
Here are the West Ham player ratings from Saturday’s derby day defeat.
Mads Hermansen – 3
Poor yet again. He was targeted at every corner after how he’s started the season. For the first goal he was easily beaten but it was poor marking from the defence and yet again another goal conceded from a corner. The second goal he seemed in denial as he stepped forward and was subsequently lobbed. With Łukasz Fabiański back at the club it wouldn’t be a surprise to anyone to see him back in the Starting lineup after how Hermansen and Alphonse Areola have started the season.
The only reason he has gotten a three was for his amazing double save which denied Mohammed Kudus from scoring against his former club.
Kyle Walker-Peters – 5
Started for the second consecutive game and put in a solid display yet again. He linked up well with Bowen on the right but did get caught out by Xavi Simons and Djed Spence on several occasions.
Konstantinos Mavropanos – 5
After being so poor last season, he’s stepped up at the start of this campaign and played ok against Spurs. Could be to blame for Lucas Bergvall’s goal as he let the midfielder run in behind him but was a good goal.
Max Kilman – 5
Same as Mavropanos, didn’t play badly and wasn’t dribbled past once and put in some solid clearances. Seemed to lose confidence after the first goal went in but could same the same for the whole team.
ElHadji Malick Diouf**** – 7 (West Ham POTM)
Despite the score being 3-0, Diouf played well and was the Hammers’ best player on the day. He stopped Kudus from producing anything really threatening and got forward numerous times. He also linked up with Crysencio Summerville well, especially with it being the first time they’ve started together.
Tomáš Souček – 3
Up until the 54th minute, the Czech international was key for the Hammers defensively, as he won all his aerial duels and produced some key clearances to relieve pressure on the defence. However, his red card takes his rating down due to it probably being the main factor as to why West Ham ended up losing 3-0. An unlucky red card, as no harm was intended but was the correct decision.
James Ward-Prowse – 2
Don’t understand how he played 89 minutes. Offered nothing apart from set pieces. Potter needs to drop him otherwise we’ll keep getting caught out in midfield. With the likes of Freddie Potts on the bench it’s very surprising that Ward-Prowse is still starting.
Jarrod Bowen – 5
Didn’t do much of note. Occasionally took on Spence but struggled to get into the game. Ended the game with the fewest number of touches of any outfield player.
Mateus Fernandes – 6
Looked really threatening in the first half. Should’ve shot on several occasions but ended up passing instead. Seems like the missing piece in midfield as he can attack and defend. Surprised he was taken off in the 61st minute but probably due to the red card.
Crysencio Summerville – 6
His first start since January and he is what West Ham have been missing. Took on Porro and was so direct and caused havoc on the Spurs backline. Again disappointing to see him come off so early, but he is just coming back from a bad injury.
Lucas Paquetá – 5
Had **West Ham**’s best chance of the game and could’ve passed to Summerville but dragged the ball wide of the target. Played as the acting striker in the false nine and was slightly impactful in the first half, but didn’t do anything in the second, and was subsequently brought off in the 68th minute.
Substitutes
Luis Guilherme – 5
Came on in the 61st minute and made a few energetic runs, but the game was already lost.
Soungoutou Magassa – 6
Came on for his debut and looked very comfortable in midfield, completing 12 out of the 13 passes he attempted. Hopefully, he starts the next game after his brief cameo.
Callum Wilson – 5
Should’ve started the game. Didn’t really do anything, but he came on at 3-0 and West Ham failed to create anything after that so not really his fault.
Andy Irving – N/A
Came on for Ward-Prowse in the 90th minute.
