Popular ex-Newcastle United player takes up new role as U19s coach at Championship club

**Newcastle United had a novel way of stopping one player from scoring against them every time they met ... make him a Newcastle player.**

That's exactly what they did with Ryan Taylor, or to give him his full name, Ryan Taylor Overthewall.

The Wigan Athletic man had an uncanny knack for scoring against Newcastle, so the Magpies swooped to bring him into the fold so he could no longer cause us any damage.

Taylor went on to become hugely popular on Tyneside, helped in large part by scoring a direct free-kick against local rivals Sunderland, which sparked his 'Over The Wall' chant.

Ryan Taylor has stayed connected to Newcastle United since leaving in 2015

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Taylor was part of the Newcastle United hype train before the Carabao Cup final and showed that he's another former Magpie who refers to Newcastle as "we".

Now, though, the 41-year-old has taken up a new role as Lead Development Phase Coach. Taylor will oversee the Preston North End U19s, having gained his UEFA A License.

[The Lancashire Post](https://www.lep.co.uk/sport/football/preston-north-end/preston-north-end-academy-news-pnefc-newcastle-united-andy-fensome-ryan-taylor-5318785) has confirmed that Taylor replaces Andy Fensome, who left the club after 10 years.

Could Ryan Taylor's new career path lead him back to Newcastle?

---------------------------------------------------------------

Taylor is one of those lads we'd welcome back to the club in a heartbeat, so hopefully his first stint in the world of coaching goes well and he can start to work his way to the top and maybe find his way back to the Toon.

Regardless of whether or not his trajectory leads him back here, we wish him the absolute best of luck.
