McCarthy expected to miss Vikings-Bengals game with sprained ankle, opens door for Wentz

EAGAN, Minn. — After suffering a sprained ankle on Sunday night at U.S. Bank Stadium, quarterback J.J. McCarthy is expected to miss some time for the Vikings.

He more than likely won’t be available for Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, and while head coach Kevin O’Connell didn’t think McCarthy would need to be placed on injured reserve, he didn’t completely rule out the possibility.

Former North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz is No. 2 on the depth chart, ahead for former Gopher Max Brosmer. Wentz signed with the team just before the regular season.

“I do want to see how he responds to treatment this week,” O’Connell said of McCarthy. “(I) just give him a ton of credit for having the toughness to get that thing taped up and keep playing.”

Asked exactly when the injury happened against the game against the Atlanta Falcons, head coach Kevin O’Connell pointed to a play on which McCarthy escaped the pocket and scrambled for 16 yards up the left sideline.

Notably, McCarthy appeared to come up a little bit lame in real time, then he threw incomplete to star receiver Justin Jefferson on the very next play, perhaps because he couldn’t fully step into the throw.
