Warriors Have Made New Offer to Jonathan Kuminga: Report

The ongoing contract negotiations between the Golden State Warriors and their forward, Jonathan Kuminga, have yet to reach a conclusion.

Kuminga remains an unrestricted free agent, but there is a chance that the two sides could decide on a deal soon. When will that happen? That part still remains a mystery.

However, it appears the Warriors are doing all they can to retain Kuminga as they reportedly offered him a new deal. According to ESPN's Anthony Slater and Shams Charania, the Warriors offered the 22-year-old a three-year, $75.2 million deal.

"The Warriors have strengthened their effort. Late last week, Dunleavy offered Kuminga a three-year, $75.2 million deal with a team option in the third season, sources told ESPN. That's $48.3 million guaranteed in the first two seasons and basically the same per year salary as fellow restricted free agent Josh Giddey, who re-signed with the Chicago Bulls for four years and $100 million. The difference: Half the length and a team-controlled third season and a subliminal understanding that the contract is more trade asset than commitment to a partnership."

Recent reports showed that Kuminga was "strongly considering" the qualifying offer from the Warriors, which is a one-year, $7.9 million offer. That deal would give him an inherent no-trade clause and make him an unrestricted free agent next offseason.

Slater and Charania also mentioned that the Warriors would want the same structure for the three-year deal, similar to the two-year one they previously offered him.

"Dunleavy and the Warriors are requesting the same structure as their previous proposal on the two-year, $45 million framework -- a team option on the second season and a waiving of the inherent no-trade clause, sources said."

Kuminga was regarded as a high hope for the Warriors, and they showed their confidence in drafting him with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. However, that has not been the case this summer.

His future with the team, even if he decides to stick around for this upcoming season, is still murky. Other teams have shown interest in trading for Kuminga, but the Warriors have been reluctant to accept any sign-and-trade offers.

Something could and should be brewing for both sides as the Oct. 1 qualifying offer deadline is approaching.

As things stand, the Warriors only have nine players under contract, so once the Kuminga issue gets resolved, expect Golden State to make a flurry of moves.
