The Kansas City Chiefs are off to a slow start to the 2025 NFL season, losing their first two games to the Los Angeles Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles. The Chiefs have struggled to score points in their first two games, and have relied on MVP-level quarterback Patrick Mahomes to keep the team competitive.
Tight end Travis Kelce's frustration has been clear, and he showed his emotions on the field this week when he yelled in frustration after a Mahomes touchdown. Kelce and other members of the team are understandably upset about the slow start, but the tight end has made mistakes in each of the first two games.
In the first game of the season, he ran into Xavier Worthy on a route, injured the wide receiver. On Sunday against the Eagles, a Kelce drop in the end zone led to a game-changing interception.
Former Host Calls Out NFL Star After Loss
After Sunday's game, one former ESPN host said that Kelce is one of the key sources of the team's struggles.
"Here's the hard truth that Chiefs fans don't want to hear is that their tight end, Travis Kelce, is killing the Chiefs right now," said ex-ESPN personality Trey Wingo on social media.
"You go back and look at that week 1 loss in Brazil, he had a touchdown in his hands late in that game, dropped it."
Wingo also explained that taking Worthy out of the game set the Chiefs' offense back, and prevented them from getting into the game against Los Angeles.
Kelce made the decision to return for another season - his 13th - after the Chiefs lost in the Super Bowl last year. The legendary tight end had a bad game against Philadelphia last February, but the same could be said for most of the Kansas City roster.
What's Next For Kelce and the Chiefs?
Kelce's teammates encouraged him to return for another year after the Super Bowl loss, but history does not bode well for their chances to return to that game. Throughout NFL history, teams to start 0-2 only make the postseason around 11% of the time.
The NFL may be the most difficult sport for bouncing back from a poor start, as teams play only 17 games in the regular season. The Chiefs are already at the bottom of their division, and they'll need to avoid slips for the rest of the season to keep up with the best teams in the AFC.
We'll see how Kelce and Kansas City responds to the poor start when they take on the New York Giants next Sunday night.
