When the Kings' front office relieved Mike Brown of his duties as head coach in late 2024, fans assumed there was a plan in place for what came next. Apparently, they were wrong.
When the Kings' front office agreed to let veteran point guard De'Aaron Fox walk after Mike Brown was fired, fans assumed there was a plan in place for what came next. Again, they were wrong.
When the Kings' front office parted ways with general manager Monte McNair in April of 2025, fans assumed the next guy would have a clear plan. And one more time, they were wrong.
The Kings front office is out of its depth
What Kings' fans do have a guard-heavy, unbalanced team that is aging in place and no substantial roster changes over the summer. If there is any sort of plan at work, it's incredibly hard to see.
Attempts to move both Malik Monk and DeMar DeRozan have essentially been dead ends. That actually might be a good thing since the Kings' intention was apparently to bring in Russell Westbrook, another aging star approaching retirement.
What they need is more shooting, more size, and someone to run the offense who can see the floor and make timely passes. That also means building defense into the team culture by bringing in an elite rim protector who isn't afraid to throw down in the paint.
This season already looks grim for the Kings
Honestly, the bitterest pill to swallow is that the front office made no moves of substance over the offseason to make any of that happen. Instead, they gave up Jonas Valanciunas to the Denver Nuggets. Sure, Nikola Jokic needs strong backup, but so does Domantas Sabonis.
The only real acquisition of note was Dennis Schroeder, who has been playing incredibly well in EuroBasket. At the same time, he gets traded so frequently that it's hard to imagine this tenure will stick. Plus, he's hardly a replacement for Fox at point guard.
The Kings' front office seems dedicated building a wildly imbalanced team, making the wrong moves, or no moves, to support it. Honestly, it would be a minor miracle if the Kings come close to a winning season 2025-2026.
