Syracuse, N.Y. -- The recognition kept rolling in for Syracuse wide receiver Darrell Gill Jr. on Monday, when he was named the ACC Receiver of the Week following a huge game against Colgate.
Gill caught six passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns during SU’s 66-24 win over the Raiders and his most impressive catch was celebrated on multiple ESPN programs.
All of Gill’s production came during the first half against Colgate before the game had been salted away.
After three games, Gill ranks sixth in the ACC with 269 receiving yards on 12 catches. His average of 22.4 yards per catch ranks second among qualified receivers behind only Florida State’s Duce Robinson.
His effort last Saturday included the game’s most thrilling play, a 43-yard touchdown with 2:12 left in the first quarter that required him to jump up and take the ball away from the hands of a Colgate defensive back.
The touchdown put Syracuse ahead, 14-3, and the play was named the No. 1 play in the country by ESPN’s SportsCenter and was dubbed the best catch of the week by NFL Hall of Famer Randy Moss in his weekly “You Got Mossed” segment.
As part of the segment, Moss sends a pair of custom gloves to each week’s winners.
Before Gill was offered a scholarship football scholarships by a few schools late in his recruiting process, he’d planned to run track and field at Texas State as both a jumper and a sprinter.
He displayed all those abilities while claiming the ACC’s weekly award, the first for a Syracuse player this year.
