Packers WR Christian Watson provides exciting update on future return to practice

Green Bay Packers receiver Christian Watson appears to be doing quite well in his recovery from the torn ACL he suffered in January. In fact, it sounds like Watson could be coming off the PUP list when he first becomes eligible.

Green Bay gets best-case update on star receiver

Per Matt Schneidman of The Athletic:

Christian Watson said he anticipates returning to practice when his window opens up. He’s on PUP through Week 4 because of a Week 18 ACL tear. Packers have a Week 5 bye and host the Bengals in Week 6.

Whenever a Watson update dropped during the offseason and training camp, it seemed to be a positive one. The latest news continues the trend of his excellent progress since having surgery and beginning rehab.

The Packers could use him back. Not only is Watson out, Jayden Reed broke his collarbone in Week 2 against the Commanders. All respect to Romeo Doubs, the receiver room is missing its top two targets. If nothing else, having Watson back in practice will be good for morale.

How long until he is ready to suit up on gameday remains uncertain. Putting on the practice pads will be a promising first step, but then Watson will need to build up his strength and stamina before risking his body against hostile opposition.

Detroit Lions cornerback Carlton Davis III (23) forces Green Bay Packers wide receiver Christian Watson (9) to fumble the ball after this catch, during the Thursday Night Football at Ford Field in Detroit on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2024.

Reed has a chance to return this season, but he won’t be back anytime soon. Between him and Watson, the Packers are missing 84 catches and 1,477 receiving yards from last year.

Teams typically prefer to have their byes later in the schedule, but the Packers will benefit, at least as far as receiver injuries are concerned, by getting theirs in Week 5.

Whenever Watson does return, the organization has committed to him as one of the Packers’ own. Last week, Green Bay signed the fourth-year receiver to a one-year $13.25 million extension that will keep him in Green and Gold through the 2026 campaign.
