There has been plenty of speculation over Ruben Amorim’s future at Manchester United [following the club’s recent 3-0 defeat at Manchester City](https://footballtoday.com/2025/09/15/nothing-of-a-performance-gary-neville-gives-verdict-on-manchester-uniteds-humiliating-loss-to-manchester-city/).
However, [The Telegraph](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2025/09/15/man-utd-back-ruben-amorim-data-improvement/) report the Portuguese boss still retains the backing of the Red Devils’ hierarchy despite the club’s worst start to a season in 33 years.
The club’s powerbrokers believe that United’s performances have been better than the results suggest and that the team have improved on key metrics since last term.
The Manchester giants are currently first in the Premier League for totals shots and touches in the opposition box, second for expected goals and open play xG and fourth for shots on target.
However, they have the fourth worst shot conversion rate (5.7 per cent) in the top-flight, highlighting the club’s need to convert their chances.
United delivered a disappointing display at the Etihad Stadium and deservedly lost the game by a 3-0 margin.
They are now set to welcome Chelsea to Old Trafford on Saturday, and Amorim cannot afford to lose this one as well.
The 40-year-old has received good backing in the summer transfer market, with the club bringing in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Senne Lammens.
But results have been poor so far, with the Red Devils registering just four points from four league matches and crashing out of the Carabao Cup after losing to League Two side Grimsby Town.
Amorim currently has the backing of the club’s hierarchy, but their stance could quickly change if results don’t improve soon.
