Why Graham Potter isn’t and never was the right man for West Ham

West Ham boss Graham Potter should be close to the sack after yet another spineless defeat against London rivals Spurs.

To put it simply – Graham Potter has been a complete disaster, and he hasn’t got the qualities and the minerals to succeed as West Ham United head coach.

Graham Potter has done good jobs in the past at Swedish club Östersund and at Premier League Brighton. But those are two completely different clubs and jobs compared to what he’s got at West Ham.

Östersund is a tiny club where he immediately would have gained the respect of the club and its players and had authority. At Brighton, it was obviously a massive step up to a similar level as West Ham. However, we are a still a completely different club to them.

Brighton are extremely well run, they have modern scouting systems and have kept up with how football has evolved. Not only that, they are a much smaller club than the Hammers with a lot less pressure to succeed from the fanbase, so he got a lot more time.

West Ham is a huge club, not as big as Chelsea where he also failed miserably, but a lot bigger than Brighton. Potter is a manager that is known for his calm tactical approach, its clear he doesn’t have the ruthlessness in him to manage a club with high expectations, an old school/heavily involved chairman and big name players.

A lot has been said about the excellent camaraderie in the squad right now, with many saying its the best they’ve seen at the club for a long while. However, that’s probably part of the problem, Graham Potter has made the club a positive place to be around and that isn’t showing on the pitch. No doubt, when we lose Graham Potter isn’t giving them the post-match speech like someone like Moyes would that would force them to sort it out ahead of the next game.

And the problem is, David Sullivan knew Potter wasn’t the man. Reports suggest the chairman has never been a big fan of the manager and believed he succeeded at Brighton because of what was around him. We chose not to hire him a couple of years ago because of this, so the decision to hire him in January was a crazy decision. Although we didn’t have much choice, hiring Potter when you knew he wouldn’t fit in at the club because he was the best free option is ridiculous and exactly why the fans want Sullivan replaced.

West Ham is a club that needs a manager that won’t take any nonsense from the board, this is why David Moyes succeeded at the club, he might not have played the nicest football but he was able to get ideas across to both the board and the squad of players, Potter has failed to do both at the club and it’s time to let him go.
