Harvey Elliott’s Liverpool exit didn’t come as much of a shock this summer.
Indeed, it felt like the Anfield outfit were going to end up keeping him around after RB Leipzig failed to make an offer for him, but in the end, Aston Villa swooped in for the midfielder.
The fact that Liverpool signed Florian Wirtz and kept Federico Chiesa around this term meant that there wasn’t really much room for the Englishman in Arne Slot’s set-up.
And, although his exit was emotional due to the Reds being the team that he supports, it was definitely the best thing for his career.

However, even though he’s no longer a Liverpool player, he’ll have still made the fanbase rather happy after what he did against Everton in Aston Villa’s 0-0 draw.
Harvey Elliott mocks Everton for not winning a trophy for 30 years
Ever since the former Fulham man made the switch to Anfield, it’s clear that he bleeds Liverpool.
The midfielder always put the maximum amount of effort possible when called upon by Slot and, even though he wasn’t always played in his favoured position, more often than not, he put in a good shift.
Villa have had a poor start to the 2025-26 season, with Unai Emery’s men the only team in England’s top seven divisions not to have scored a goal yet.

And, even with Elliott among their ranks, it’s clear that something just isn’t clicking for the Villans.
However, according to ESPN UK, their 0-0 draw against the Toffees didn’t stop Elliott from mocking Everton with the midfielder holding up a three and a zero with his fingers to mock Everton for not winning a trophy in the last 30 years.
“Harvey Elliott, who is on loan from Liverpool, was booed at Goodison Park during Everton vs. Aston Villa,” they wrote.
“At full-time, he responded by holding up a three and a zero to remind the home crowd of their 30-year trophy drought.
“Always a Red.”

Liverpool should have tried to keep Harvey Elliott around for a tad longer
Seeing as though Liverpool don’t have enough homegrown players among their ranks, Slot has only been able to name a 23-man squad in the Champions League.
In fact, due to the lack of homegrown players, Chiesa has been left out of the squad entirely, with Rio Ngumoha being preferred over the Italian.
Not only is this not fair to Chiesa, but it also means that the Reds are in a much worse position than some of their competitors in the competition.

Without having sufficient depth among their ranks, if they get hit by an injury crisis, for example, there’s no way that they’d be able to compete, and, now that they’ve won the Premier League, the Champions League is likely to be their main goal.
At the moment, it’s anyone’s guess what could happen, but on the face of things, it feels like Liverpool have dropped themselves in it by not keeping players such as Elliott and Jarell Quansah around.
That is, especially since both players could cover multiple positions if needed.
