Andre Onana 'will be in demand' next summer after Man Utd exit

Andre Onana is set to be a hot property next summer after finally escaping his Manchester United nightmare, according to one of his international coaches.

The Cameroonian star made a move away from Old Trafford last summer, signing for Turkish outfit Trabzonspor on loan until the end of the season. While Onana will be striving to regain his form with his new club, Cameroon coach Carlos Kameni has expressed confidence in his ability to do so.

"It's a good choice. Andre was struggling at Manchester United," he told Africa Foot. "Last season, he was heavily criticised, and since the start of the season, he'd barely played (one cup match), and everyone, including him, understood that he was likely to spend a lot of time on the bench or in the stands.

"I told him he was right. It's a good choice. It's better to be a starter at a very good club in a good league than a substitute at a big club in a big league, right?

"In Turkey, he'll certainly be watched, because he's a very good goalkeeper, but I think he'll be under a little less pressure than at Manchester United."

Kameni is so confident that Onana will bounce back to top form sooner rather than later, that he predicts a potential scramble for his services next summer.

When asked if Onana could return to a top five European side, he responded: "Yes. He hasn't lost his qualities at Manchester United.

"As can happen to all great athletes, he may experience a more complicated spell for a few months. Andre Onana is very professional, he remains a reliable player, and if he has a good season in Turkey, he'll be in demand next summer."

Onana still has just under three years remaining on his deal following his £47.5m transfer from Italian giants Inter Milan. Since arriving, he has featured in 102 matches for United, though costly mistakes have overshadowed his performances.

Onana managed just one outing for United this campaign before sealing his Turkish switch. That solitary appearance came during the humiliating Carabao Cup defeat to League Two outfit Grimsby Town.

The Cameroon international was handed his bow for his new club on Sunday after being included in the starting eleven to take on Fenerbahce.

Several recognisable figures featured in the opposing team. Former United midfielder Fred was named in Fenerbahce's starting lineup, alongside ex-Manchester City shot-stopper Ederson following his own summer transfer to Turkey.
