Luis Campos has provided further explanation for Gianluigi Donnarumma’s departure from Paris Saint-Germain, confirming the goalkeeper’s move to Manchester City was the result of financial and sporting considerations rather than any sudden rupture.
Speaking to [**RMC Sport**](https://rmcsport.bfmtv.com/football/clubs/paris-saint-germain/le-depart-de-donnarumma-du-psg-la-star-c-est-le-club-justifie-luis-campos_AV-202509150816.html) in France, the PSG advisor underlined that the Italian’s wage demands were not in line with the club’s new approach.
Campos recalled that Donnarumma, one of the key figures in last season’s Champions League triumph, had asked for a salary _“at the level of the old PSG, not the current PSG”_.
He stressed that Paris are now operating under a merit-based pay structure, with fixed and variable components depending on appearances and performances_. “Our policy is very tied to merit: you earn more when you deserve it, when you play,”_ he explained.
The Portuguese director also highlighted the role of Luis Enrique in the decision. The coach reportedly felt Donnarumma was less suited to his build-up style than Lucas Chevalier, who has now been installed as the club’s number one. _“It was a set of circumstances that brought us to this decision. We had to find solutions if no agreement was possible with Gigio,”_ Campos noted.
Beyond the individual case, the message was clear. _“The star is the club, it’s the group,”_ Campos insisted, before stating that the policy applies to everyone, regardless of name or reputation. He even suggested that if Ousmane Dembélé were to win the Ballon d’Or, he would still be offered the same merit-based conditions at renewal talks.
Campos closed by underlining that PSG’s stability comes before any player’s status: _“It’s not your past that makes you a starter here. It’s our policy.”_
Now it’s fair to say that Donnarumma has already made an impact in England. The goalkeeper delivered an impressive debut performance in the Manchester derby, showing City supporters why the club moved quickly to bring him in.
If PSG were unwilling to meet his demands, it looks like City will be more than happy to do so.
