The possibility of playing in the AFC Champions League, where he could come up against Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad, has been deemed a ‘sweetener’ for the player.

United had been aiming to sell Mather for the duration of the transfer window after conceding he would not be making the jump from the under-21s to the first team anytime soon; despite being at United since 2010, he has yet to make his senior bow.

Mather was on the verge of joining Turkish outfit Keyserispor last Friday, the Super Lig’s deadline day, until the prospective move collapsed at the final stages. United did want to sell the young Red permanently but were open to accepting a loan plus an obligation to buy to make negotiations easier.

Ultimately, there was not enough time left to complete the transfer, leaving Mather at Carrington and facing the prospect of another four months of academy football.

United oversee late business with Andre Onana loan

INEOS did sanction one late outgoing after the main European deadline in the form of Andre Onana leaving for Trabzonspor.

He flew to Turkey last Thursday to undergo his medical and put pen to paper on a season-long loan before making his debut in Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Fenerbahce. There are no buy options included in the terms, so he will return to Manchester at the end of the campaign and reassess his next steps with United, with a permanent sale the most likely outcome.
