Supporters are being warned that road closures will be in place three hours before Newcastle United's clash with Barcelona this week. The Champions League fixture will take place at St James' Park on Thursday, and motorists can expect the usual road closures.

However, the pre-match closures this week will be in operation from three hours prior to kick off rather than the usual two hours. The overnight closure of the Tyne Bridge on Thursday has also been delayed until 11.30pm to accommodate travelling fans.

Coun Karen Kilgour, leader of Newcastle City Council, said: “The return of Champions League nights to Newcastle is fantastic for the city and we wish Newcastle United the best of luck as they begin their European campaign against Barcelona. In terms of what the night will look like for supporters regarding our city’s road network, it will be the usual road closures that are in place for any home match in the city.

"The pre-match closures will be in operation from three hours prior to kick off rather than the usual two hours. In addition, Blackett Street will be closed between 5pm and 6pm to facilitate an anticipated build-up of supporters.

"As always, we would encourage supporters and all others in the city to plan their journeys in advance. We would also remind people of the recently-introduced post-match 45-minute closure of Barrack Road, between Stanhope Street and St James’ Boulevard, which will again be in place on Thursday night and for all Newcastle United home games this season following a successful trial period."

Coun Kilgour added: “To further help facilitate this fixture, the overnight closure of the Tyne Bridge on Thursday has been delayed until 11.30pm to accommodate travelling fans. We’ve worked hard with our partners to make sure our city is ready to host what promises to be a special night for Newcastle United supporters, and we hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable night as the club celebrates its return to Europe’s elite level of football.”

Newcastle United will play Barcelona at St James' Park on Thursday. Kick off is 8pm.
