Theo Walcott backs Newcastle United to make it to Champions League group stage but has one huge …

**Newcastle United are ready to have another crack at this whole Champions League thing after an unsuccessful attempt two years ago.**

The odds were already stacked against Newcastle last time round, having been drawn in the 'Group of Death', and while the Magpies only managed one win in their six group stage games, they still came very close to springing a surprise and qualifying from the group.

Ultimately, Newcastle's downfall, other than a questionable penalty decision against Paris Saint-Germain, was a slew of injuries that seemed to accumulate due to not having the squad depth to continuously play two games a week.

Eddie Howe had to select players who weren't 100% fit due to a lack of other options, and the squad paid the price.

Theo Walcott is worried about Newcastle's squad depth

-----------------------------------------------------

It's still a concern for Newcastle now despite adding six first-team players in the summer to cover pretty much every position on the pitch. Already, however, Newcastle have lost two of those players with Jacob Ramsey and Yoane Wissa set to be missing for several weeks.

This is something that Theo Walcott believes could once again be an issue for Newcastle, but he also doesn't believe it will stop them from progressing, as he told [BBC Sport.](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/c1kwmjxwpkxo)

> “I think all six English teams will do well, not just Arsenal.

>

> “I only maybe look at Newcastle and think they may not have the strength in depth for this competition, but they should still make the knockout stages.”

Squad depth isn't our main concern this time around

---------------------------------------------------

Squad depth is always going to be a concern, especially for Newcastle, which was only able to name a 21-man squad due to not meeting the homegrown quota. A couple of injuries, which the Magpies already have, will expose the squad, but there's no doubt that Newcastle are in a better position this time around than last.

Again, our biggest concern is the calibre of opponent we've been drawn against. Barring Union Saint-Gilloise, who are a bit of an unknown entity, every other side Newcastle have to face is more than capable of beating us.

Fortunately, Newcastle are no pushovers and as we showed against PSG two years ago, we fear nobody, and we can shock a lot of people.
