ALLEN PARK -- Jared Goff continues to silence the goal-post moving narratives from the national media.
There was a stat going around heading into the game against the Chicago Bears, highlighting Goff’s career record without Ben Johnson or Sean McVay calling his plays. Goff entered the day 3-18-1 without with those calling his offense. But let’s be real, one of those was his rookie season in Los Angeles. The other was his first season in Detroit, with the Lions starting their full rebuild in 2021.
And the Detroit Lions quarterback delivered an ultra-efficient showing in his first game with Johnson on the opposing sideline. Goff had 334 yards and five touchdowns, completing more than 80% of his passes in the 52-21 victory.
First, he was a “product of McVay” in Los Angeles. Then, after finding new life in Detroit, the whispers shifted, saying that Goff was nothing more than a “product of Johnson’s system.”
MLive’s Dungeon of Doom podcast discussed Goff’s brilliant day, while throwing shade on those sharing those narratives without proper context.
“Now, (they say) Goff is not anything without Ben Johnson. And then last week they just played a very good Packers team ... But when Ben Johnson returns to Detroit, Goff puts on a master class,” co-host Kory Woods explained of the narratives.
“It was a statement game for everybody. On the coaching staff, everybody on both sides of the ball. Goff needed that game.”
Goff was asked about the narrative after the team’s win on Sunday, too. The Lions quarterback joked that “we’d have to have a really long press conference if you want me to talk about that.”
“All it takes is one game, huh? I mean, I don’t – nothing to say about that," Goff said. “We had a good day today.”
