Anyone who feels Leeds United supporters may have been a little critical of 49ers Enterprises following the end of the transfer window, then it is nothing compared to the heat the owners are feeling north of the border.
Paraag Marathe and the board of Rangers are not popular at the moment following a shocking start to the season by the Glasgow giants, with huge pressure on new manager Russell Martin after a pretty woeful start to the season. Rangers' failures in Europe and the league have seen early calls for Martin's exit with his appointment criticised by supporters.
It not a great environment, especially for new players to come into as they try to find their feet at a new club. One such player is former Leeds United favourite Joe Rothwell. Many Leeds fans had hoped the Whites would make a play to keep hold of the central midfield man after his arrival on loan last season, only to see him switch to Rangers in the summer.
So far it has not gone well for Rothwell, whose performances have come under criticism. Former Celtic striker Sutton has defended the players at Ibrox, calling the environment toxic to play in.
He said: “The recruitment is a massive issue. I feel sorry for some of the players he’s brought in from down south. Max Aarons, I thought on the face of it, that’s a good signing but Russell is playing him as a left-back.
“The crowd are on his back. Joe Rothwell, a really decent playing career at Leeds, Blackburn. He’s really been affected by expectation, moans and groans. It’s a difficult place to play; the environment is toxic.”
Rothwell is signed to a three-year deal at Rangers, who are currently 10th in the Scottish Premier League table without a win in five games so far.
