Julian Alvarez will miss Atletico Madrid’s Champions League showdown with Liverpool due to injury. The La Liga side take on the Reds at Anfield on Wednesday night in the first round of the league phase of Europe’s elite club competition.
However, Diego Simeone’s side will be without Alvarez after Atletico confirmed he was not part of their travelling squad for the game. The forward was Atletico’s Player of the Season last year after finishing the campaign as their top scorer, with 29 goals in 57 games.
But a knee injury picked up during the win over Villarreal at the weekend will keep him out of the game at Anfield.
Asked for an update on Alvarez following Saturday's game, Simeone said: "Until he wakes up tomorrow and gets through his first few hours after the discomfort he had.
"We hope it's nothing and we trust he'll be back in top condition as soon as possible."
Atletico have also confirmed that Maria Gimenez, Johnny Cardoso, Thiago Almada and Alex Baena are also all unavailable, although David Hancko is in the squad.
