'The reality is': Stefan Borson shares how much Burnley could realistically win from Everton…

Burnley are seeking up to £50m in compensation through their case against Everton, which is set to begin this week.

David Moyes and his side have enjoyed an impressive start to the 2025/26 campaign in the Premier League.

However, seasons of years gone by are now raising their ugly heads to potentially haunt Everton.

Having been relegated to the Championship in the 2021/22 campaign, Burnley are arguing that Everton’s points deduction should have been applied for the season they breached the PSR rules.

As a result, Everton are now being taken to court for a whopping sum of £50m in compensation.

Burnley’s case against Everton has been brewing for months, with the official hearing set to get underway this week.

With this in mind, financial expert Stefan Borson has shared his early thoughts on the potential outcome of the hearing.

Finance expert shares Burnley vs Everton PSR case verdict

The Friedkins have eased Everton’s PSR worries since they were handed the keys on Merseyside back in December.

Issues in the past are there for all to see, though. Farhad Moshiri’s time at Everton ended in financial struggles with PSR at the very top of the concerns.

Speaking to TalkSPORT, the football finance expert, Borson, has shared his thoughts on whether Burnley have a solid case against the Toffees.

“I think they’ve [Burnley] got a decent case. Not quite on those terms of £50m, and I think the argument that the six points should have been deducted in that season doesn’t work,” he said.

“The reality is in cases like this where Burnley can show that there was a real and substantial chance is the test that is required. And that is probably only something like a 10% chance.

“Where they can show that Everton would have got four or more less points and, therefore, Burnley would have survived, they may well win some compensation.”

Of course, Everton avoided relegation in the 2021/22 campaign by a four-point margin to the Clarets, which Burnley feel wouldn’t have happened had Everton not breached PSR.

The Friedkins have opened new PSR headroom for Everton in recent months which will avoid these issues going forward.

But it seems as if Scott Parker’s side may have an opportunity to cash in on this hearing.

How much Burnley could actually win from Everton hearing

The sum of money being demanded by Burnley is substantial, but there is a clear belief that it is a pie in the sky figure.

Adding to his thoughts on the possibility of Burnley winning the case, Borson has shared what he thinks the Clarets could actually take away from the hearing.

“The only question is how many extra points was it and whilst it’s difficult for a commission to assess whether it would have been three points, four points, five points, they’ll have a go and it’ll be on a weighted basis,” Borson claimed.

“As I say, if they think there is a 10% or 20% chance that Everton would have got four or more less points, then Burnley will win something. It’s likely to be a percentage of what they’re asking for.”

“They’ll know the likely range that they’re talking about, which is probably somewhere between £0 and £10m. So, it feels like the sort of amount that should be readily settleable.”

The Friedkins have brought huge money into Everton through fresh revenue streams, but this is an issue which they will have known about ahead of their purchase of the club.
