The transfer window closed two weeks ago, but that hasn’t stopped the odd rumour emerging on what Newcastle United could do heading into 2026.
It was a turbulent summer that ended with a double boost as Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa both signed in attack, following earlier moves for winger Anthony Elanga, midfielder Jacob Ramsey, centre-back Malick Thiaw and goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.
However, with £125m secured for Alexander Isak and money available in future windows as a result, Newcastle appear to have one market opportunity on their radar over in Manchester.
According to [talkSPORT](https://talksport.com/football/premier-league/3559436/transfer-news-newcastle-mainoo-man-utd-coventry-rudoni-wanchope/), Newcastle are lining up a move for Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo.
The 21-year-old was ‘desperate’ to leave in the final days of the summer window after falling out of favour with current boss Ruben Amorim, who has handed the midfielder just 73 minutes of football over their opening four games.
Eddie Howe is thought to be a big admirer of the England international, and it’s believed Newcastle could test Man Utd’s resolve in the January transfer window after the Red Devils blocked deadline day approaches.
TalkSPORT report that Mainoo’s Man Ud teammates are baffled by Amorim’s lack of faith in the midfielder, who will push to leave once again in the New Year if his game time does not improve.
Newcastle currently have decent depth in midfield, with Miley, Willock and Ramsey all options behind starting trio Tonali, Bruno and Joelinton.
However, with the club aiming to compete on four fronts this season and already losing Ramsey to a foot injury, Howe may be looking for additional depth to ensure we don’t fall short after injuries and fatigue caught up with us in our last Champions League season two years ago.
