Now, after an absence of over 20 years in most cases, Taco Bell’s most cult favorite item has returned to the mortal world like Dante through Inferno.

It’s a development the Fox 8 Digital Desk has followed closely since investigating into what happened to the chili cheese burrito three years ago, following the chain’s announcement that they were bringing back the retro “Mexican Pizza”.

Taco Bell is known for an ever-changing menu. Items come and go. Many items, like their nacho fries, return but get yanked again without warning, creating a frenzy for fast food fans everywhere.
In an effort to rekindle some old magic, following the success of the Mexican Pizza reboot, Taco Bell launched its “Decades” menu, bringing back select items from the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s.
The Decades menu started last year and changes from time to time, sometimes with themes. However, the first couple of rollouts did not feature the cost-friendly treat tucked between a lightly warmed flour tortilla and filled with a generous helping of creamy beef chili and cheddar cheese that blended into a cacophony of flavors that, unfortunately, Gen Z had yet to know.
The thing about the chili cheese burrito, affectionately known to some as the “CC-Burr”, is that many of its fans never got closure. There was never a definitive discontinuation of the cc-burr. Taco Bell just began to quietly phase it out towards the end of the 1990s after about a decade of run.
Individual franchises were allowed to choose whether or not to continue the item, which led to an online tracker organically created by customers. Taco Bell has also officially recognized the existence of the tracker, leading them to classify the item as their “most passionately pursued item” of the past.
Last week, patient fans got to see their favorite wallet-friendly item come back to life. It was brought back as a part of its “Y2K” themed decades menu.

Now the flavor explosion can be passed down from Gen X and millennials to Gen Z and Gen Alpha.
Other menu items brought back from the peak millennial era are:
Cool Ranch Doritos Taco
Double Decker Taco
7-Layer Burrito
Caramel Apple Empanada

It remains to be seen what happens to the cc-burr. The trends of Taco Bell point to this return being a temporary stay.
If the cc-burr is to become a mainstay once again, it’s safe to say fans won’t take the simple but impactful staple for granted.
If it has to depart, like so many legends of the Bell in years past, perhaps now a proper goodbye will be in order.
The waters of nostalgia may, at times, be too treacherous to wade in forever, but it’s safe to dip your feet...every once in a little while.
