'I think:' James Tarkowski makes bold Everton claim as Liverpool gear up for their Premier League clash

The Merseyside derby is arguably one of the most iconic games in the Premier League season.

Liverpool and Everton have been arch-rivals ever since both clubs were founded, and although the Reds have come out on top more often than the Toffees, there have been some exciting games.

There’s always a yellow card or two in the game, with the odd red card even sneaking in too.

At the moment, it feels obvious that Liverpool will come out on top, but with the form that players such as Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye are in at the moment, anything could happen.

However, before the derby takes place on Saturday, the Reds will have to ensure that all of their players stay fit after their Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid.

James Tarkowski believes Everton will only ‘get better’ as they gear up to face Liverpool

At the moment, Liverpool are sitting at the top of the Premier League table with 12 points to their name.

The Reds have won all four of their opening games, with each of their winning strikes coming in the dying embers of the game.

And, although leaving the winning strike until the last few minutes of the game keeps fans entertained, it’s hardly a viable way to go through an entire season.

Ahead of the Merseyside derby, James Tarkowski was speaking to Everton’s official website and made a bold claim about the Toffees only getting better as the season goes on.

“I think we’re going to get better. We’re going to keep progressing, keep improving with the players we’ve got here – there’s some very good players on the bench who haven’t been used today who I think can be very exciting for us,” he said.

“We’ve took on Villa and I know they’ve not had a great start to the season, but I think they’re one of the best teams around. So to put a performance like that, to sort of dominate for most of the game, just despite we didn’t get the goal in the end.

“[We’re] slightly disappointed that we didn’t win, but as a defender, it’s a clean sheet – and I thought as a team we defended really solidly well throughout the game and kept a team with very, very good forward players to very little chance.”

Arne Slot may have a trick or two up his sleeve for Liverpool’s game against Everton

One of the main things that Liverpool fans will be looking forward to this week is seeing Alexander Isak playing for the club.

The Sweden international missed out on the Reds’ matchday squad against Burnley due to the lack of fitness that he has from not playing for Newcastle during pre-season.

And, although Isak is set to earn his debut against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday in their Champions League clash, he could be allowed to play for longer against Everton.

Another option that Slot will likely have by then is a fully fit Jeremie Frimpong.

The right-back has been out injured for the last few weeks, and although he got a few minutes against Scott Parker’s men, Slot could choose to unleash him against Everton so that he can face Vitalii Mykolenko.

At the moment, it’s anyone’s guess what could happen, but, with the way things have panned out for Liverpool so far, fans will likely be hoping that Slot’s men don’t leave it until the last minute to seal the win.
