Several of West Ham United Women’s players out on loan were in action over the weekend, with a number enjoying winning performances for their clubs.
Midfielder Keira Flannery was handed her first start for Charlton Athletic on Sunday and marked the occasion with a full 90 minutes in a 2-1 win at Durham.
The Addicks overturned a half-time deficit at The Graham Sports Centre, scoring twice in an eight-minute spell in the second half.
Durham had led through Elizabeth Hepple’s opener, but late goals from substitutes Gillian Kenney and Lucy Fitzgerald sealed Charlton’s second win in as many matches, sending them to the top of the Barclays Women’s Championship table.
They next host Ipswich Town, who slipped to a narrow 1-0 home defeat against Nottingham Forest, this coming weekend.
Hammers defender Jessie Stapleton featured in that match for Forest, coming off the bench in the 75th minute to help secure all three points.
Nahikari García’s goal shortly after the restart proved decisive at Colchester Community Stadium, with Forest now targeting successive victories when they welcome Crystal Palace.
Over in Bristol, Camila Saez made her first start for the Robins, who registered a 2-0 home win over Portsmouth. The Chilean international played 55 minutes before being substituted, with Rio Hardy putting the hosts ahead before half-time.
Lexi Lloyd-Smith then wrapped up the points late on. Fellow Hammer Jess Ziu was absent from the squad. Bristol now turn their attention to an away trip to Southampton, hoping to build on their first league win of the campaign.
Elsewhere, Ruby Warwick once again started for Barking in the South East Regional Women’s Premier Division. Despite her efforts, Barking slipped to a narrow 3-2 defeat at Sutton United. They will aim to respond this Sunday in the second qualifying round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup at home to Cambridge City.
In the Women’s National League Southern Premier Division, Rebekah Dowsett was an unused substitute for Watford as they came out on top in a thrilling 4-3 win at Cheltenham Town.
Midfielder Soraya Walsh did not feature in the Hornets’ matchday squad. Sitting second in the table with three wins from four, Watford are set to face Billericay Town next weekend.
