Aston Villa chief hits back at 'useless' criticism ahead of Sunderland trip

Villa have enjoyed a brilliant few seasons under boss Unai Emery, finishing seventh, fourth and sixth, but they've endured a slow start to the current campaign, picking up just two points from their first four games.

Villa are still yet to score in the league this season.

Emery acknowledged that was a concern ahead of tonight's Carabao Cup tie at Brentford, but was encouraged by the weekend draw at Everton, as was the club's director of football operations Damian Vidagany.

He wrote on X: "A point that doesn't shine, yes, we need goals, of course they will come... but a point that strengthens us and our spirit," he wrote on X.

"We're working well and we'll soon improve. The first stone of a magnificent construction never attracts the attention of spectators. But it's very necessary."

Vidagany then replied to a fan on social media and asked for patience.

He wrote: "My humble suggestion is to ask - understanding moods are not high - to help the boys with support and memory of what they did in three amazing years. Much better years than the previous 15, 20?

"If you don't want to give them credit, I respect it. If someone wants to push us with negativity, it is OK, you also can do it. But it is useless.

"If you want to help, as you the fans are the real owners of the Villa and protectors of the club and we know you deserve more. But let me remind you that in football there are good times and not good times. And everyone can choose one way or another. I believe in Unai and my team."

Villa were hampered by FFP restrictions in the summer transfer window and, as well as being limited in the business they could do in terms of incomings, lost key players. Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio departed after loan spells and Jacob Ramsey left for Newcastle.

Appearing on 5Live this week, former boss Dean Smith said: "JJ \[Ramsey\] was the one who really surprised me.

"Villa have obviously got stung by FFP or you wouldn't be selling one of the players who can score you really important goals as he did throughout his career there.

"I looked at the squad earlier in the season and a few of the younger players were on the bench.

"Ollie Watkins guarantees you 15 goals a season. He will come through and score goals.

"They haven't created too much away from home, half the game against Newcastle they were playing with 10 men. For me it's not too doom and gloom."

After the Everton draw, Emery said:  “Of course we will need to win but this point will help us for the next matches.

“We have to try to get offensively tactically better, help the strikers get into better positions to score, get confidence winning.

“I know the situation we have now and now we are starting to adapt a lot of players after they are working with us two weeks (after the close of the transfer window).”
