Giants make under-the-radar reunion that might just stick this time

The New York Giants are coming off one of the most electric and out-of-nowhere performances in recent memory. While it was a thrilling game overall, the hurt from their 40-37 Week 2 overtime loss will linger for a while.

There was a lot of good that came out of the game... but a lot of bad came from it, too. Even still, sitting at 0-2 can't make this front office and coaching staff feel remotely safe — there's still a lot of work to be done. And on Monday, they might have taken another swing at potentially doing so.

As reported by NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the G-Men are re-signing training camp standout Dalen Cambre to the practice squad. The 24-year-old return specialist and wide receiver joins a 17-man group that already features the likes of return man Ihmir Smith-Marsette. So... for a pretty small roster move on the surface, it's actually a rather interesting move to make if you look closer, especially now.

Giants sign preseason darling Dalen Cambre to the practice squad

Raise your hand if you're confused by the number of special teams-related moves the New York Giants have made over the past month or so. It started with Bryce Ford-Wheaton tearing his Achilles, leading to the team re-signing Olszewski, whom they let go at the start of free agency. Then came the releases of Smith-Marsette, Cambre, and Olszewski on roster cut day.

Of the three, only Smith-Marsette was brought back onto the practice squad immediately, followed by Gunner a bit later. The team then claimed Beau Brade and Rico Payton (who they put on injured reserve), which opened up a roster spot for Olszewski.

We thought that was it. Wrong.

Right before the Week 2 thriller against Dallas, Big Blue claimed KR/WR Xavier Gipson to replace linebacker Micah McFadden, who went on injured reserve with a foot injury. Now Cambre's back. What the heck is going on? I'm out of breath just writing this.

With the new kickoff rules, the return game has never been more back, but does this team really need two specialists on the active roster and two on the practice squad? Something's going on here.

The undrafted rookie out of Louisiana had a really strong camp, but he was never going to make the roster. And it's unlikely he'll earn many, if any, snaps as a receiver moving forward. The name of his game is all about the returns. In five years as a Rajin' Cajun, he totaled 10 catches for 123 yards. Not exactly life-changing stuff. But desperate times call for desperate measures, and if the front office believes bringing Cambre back will help this team either now or in the future, it's worth a shot.

Whatever the reason for another special teams-related move, the Giants need a win in Week 3. It's their home opener on Sunday night, against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. It's a tall order.

At this rate, the Giants might end up fielding an entire roster made up of return specialists. Anything to start winning games, right?
