A PENSIONER is set to appear in court over the alleged racist abuse of two Leeds United players.
Largie Ramazani, who is now on loan at Valencia for 12 months, and club captain Ethan Ampadu were targeted by abuse from the away end as they left the pitch at Elland Road.
United had just beaten Sunderland 2-1 in the Sky Bet Championship last season, on February 17, when the players were subjected to alleged racist abuse, with the tunnel to the changing rooms sitting right next to the section where visiting fans sit.
West Yorkshire Police said today that Steven Patterson, 66, of Stranton Street, Bishop Auckland was arrested on suspicion of causing racially aggravated harassment, alarm or distress.
He has now been summoned by postal requisition to appear at Leeds Magistrates' Court next month, on October 17.
Leeds said in a statement published on the club’s website: “Leeds United Football Club, Ethan Ampadu and Largie Ramazani would all like to thank West Yorkshire Police for their support in this matter.
“There is no room for racism in football or society. The club will be making no further comment.”
