Barry starts: David Moyes must make three changes for Everton to beat Liverpool [view]

Everton will make the short trip to Liverpool this weekend in the Premier League, and David Moyes will be weighing up how to come away with three points, something the Toffees have struggled to do at Anfield over the last few years.

Everton's last victory over their Merseyside rivals came back in 2021 under Carlo Ancelotti. Since then, Liverpool have won four meetings on the bounce in the Premier League, without even conceding a goal. There's been a huge gap between the two clubs in recent years, and Moyes is tasked with trying to shorten that while he's in charge.

It's been a positive start to the campaign for the Toffees, and it's been refreshing for the supporters to see more strengthen in depth, meaning they can make multiple changes without it hampering the performance of the team too much.

Changes Moyes Must Make Ahead of Everton v Liverpool

The first change is in the defence. James Garner has been filling in at left-back at times this season and has done an impressive job out of position, but he'll be up against one of the best in the league in Mohamed Salah if he does start. Vitalli Mykolenko has been out injured, but if he's fit enough to return, he should be coming straight back into the starting XI.

Mykolenko has done a superb job on Salah in recent years and often performs better when he's up against a strong winger, perhaps due to upping his game on the big occasions. It doesn't necessarily mean Garner has to drop out, as he could line up in the middle of the park.

Tim Iroegbunam started alongside Idrissa Gueye in midfield at the weekend against Aston Villa, but he was substituted in the second half, with Merlin Rohl coming off the bench and impressing. The German midfielder will be pushing for a start, but if Mykolenko is fit, then Garner should come into the middle. It's a close call between Rohl and Garner, but the latter's experience in the Premier League and games of this magnitude mean he should start alongside Gueye.

The centre-forward position is a tricky one. Beto has caused Liverpool problems in the past, but they'll know what to expect with him now. Barry offers something a little different and is more of an unknown to the Liverpool defence, and his pace and ball-carrying ability in transition could be crucial.

If Moyes brings in Barry for Beto, Mykolenko for Iroegbunam, and shifts Garner back into the midfield, they could have a better chance of beating their rivals.
