**The Champions League gets underway this week with Newcastle United in action against Barcelona on Thursday, in case we hadn't mentioned it.**
Premier League champions Liverpool get their Champions League campaign underway tomorrow night as they take on Atletico Madrid.
It's expected that the Reds will be there or thereabouts come the end of the competition, and given that they've spent half a billion pounds this summer to add to the team that easily won the Premier League last season, so they should.
Former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher made a bold prediction on CBS Sports about who will finish as the competition's top scorer.

Jamie Carragher backs Alexander Isak to be UCL top scorer
---------------------------------------------------------
Moments before [David Beckham claimed Newcastle would surprise people](https://nufcfeed.com/david-beckham-says-too-many-people-have-written-newcastle-united-off-in-the-champions-league-already-1570780), Carragher spoke about how Alexander Isak would finish as the top scorer in the Champions League.
The striker, signed from Newcastle for £125 million on deadline day, hasn't even kicked a ball for Liverpool yet due to not being fit enough even to be part of the squad as they fluked their way to a 1-0 win over Burnley on Sunday.
Isak's strike action over the summer means he's way behind on his fitness and needs time to build his way up to being a regular for Arne Slot, so without ever having seen how Isak would fit in to Liverpool's style, Carragher saying he'll top the scorers charts feels very bold.
Alexander Isak needs to get fit before we start getting carried away by how many goals he's going to score
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We do expect that Isak will score plenty for Liverpool, obviously. We saw how good he was for Newcastle, and as much as we'd all like to pretend he wasn't that good anyway, we all know he was; that's why it hurt so much that he did what he did.
But we also think there will be a period of adjustment for him and the team while they get to grips with each other's style.
If Isak plays tomorrow for Liverpool, then he could be in with a shout, but if he's still not fit enough to take part, that's going to set him back even more. And we're talking about a competition that also has Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland, Robert Lewandowski and Nick Woltemade in it.
