Aston Villa player ratings as prodigal son claims Motm honours in Everton stalemate

Aston Villa fans have had their say on Saturday’s dreadful performance at Everton and picked a Man of the Match many of them wouldn’t have played.

Villa supporters submitted their player ratings via our AVF ratings form, which we’ll be inviting you to do via our social media throughout the 2025/26 season.

The process is simple. We’ll share a link at full time to ask fans to give every Villa player a score out of 10 – without a zero because we’re grown-ups and so are you – before adding in my own ratings from Aston Villa Review and taking an average.

These average scores will be used for Power Rankings each month and, ultimately, to crown a Player of the Season.

Everton v Villa player ratings

Emiliano Martínez – 8.3 – MOTM

The Martínez saga came to an end with a return to the starting line-up, a clean sheet and a terrific shot-stopping performance. The goalkeeper gestured semi-apologetically to the away fans after the match and that’s that, but my question mark remains over his level of culpability for Villa’s stinking lack of tempo.

Matty Cash – 6.2

Another weekend, another Premier League match from which Villa fans draw the conclusion that while Cash’s attacking output isn’t up to much and his defending isn’t the best, he wasn’t actually Villa’s worst player or even close to it. Villa’s tactics are killing his game.

Ezri Konsa – 6.3

Villa weren’t defensively solid, exactly, but they did keep a second clean sheet of the season. I thought the central defenders were broadly fine but you’ll forgive me for not caring about Konsa’s pass completion rate given Villa’s strategic approach.

Tyrone Mings – 6.0

Konsa edged out Mings on average and my ratings had him slightly higher than his partner too. Mings stood up to a tough physical battle pretty well. Everton had some chances and Villa needed their goalkeeper, but my sense is they would have had more if Mings and Konsa had been bullied.

Lucas Digne – 5.8

Digne’s average rating is a little on the high side, for my money – I thought his performance when Villa had possession, with a back three designed to get the full-backs forward on this occasion, was one of the team’s major shortcomings.

Lamare Bogarde – 6.7

Bogarde was my MOTM by far. He produced a really good performance not just in the context of this match but, you know, actually really good. Good with the ball. Good without the ball. Well done.

Youri Tielemans – 5.0

Villa’s midfield man only lasted 45 minutes and was obviously affected by the injury that took him out of the game. Bang on average is fair enough, though I thought he was handy in possession other than one big mistake.

John McGinn – 5.8

McGinn is better in midfield than in any sort of wide position. I stand by that. But this set-up wasn’t reliant on him for width and he was able to get involved in better areas even before Tielemans’ injury forced him into a double pivot with Bogarde.

Morgan Rogers – 4.2

We saw a sliver of Rogers’ best after a fantastic England performance and an awful lot of his worst. Rogers’ inability to find form is becoming a big problem.

Emi Buendía – 5.8

One of Villa’s four changes from the Crystal Palace game, Buendía was also among Villa’s better players as I saw it. As much as I like him, that’s not a benchmark that puts you in the top half of the Premier League.

Ollie Watkins – 4.3

It was the same old story for Watkins this season. Villa didn’t get him into the game often enough and he was miles off it when they did. I don’t think it’s Watkins’ fault, but it’s becoming very tough to watch.

Substitutes

Evann Guessand (on HT) – 5.5

Guessand replaced Tielemans and showed some flashes in attacking areas but Villa didn’t spend enough time in those areas for him or anyone else to making anything happen.

Harvey Elliott (on 71) – 5.2

Elliott should have started and didn’t. He came on in the midst of a shocking Villa performance, looked good, did fine, and didn’t have much time really to change the timbre.

Donyell Malen (on 82) – 4.4

Malen was a late substitute. I don’t grade them but clearly some of you do, you maniacs.

Victor Lindelöf (on 82) – 4.6

Made his Villa debut off the bench. See Malen.
