Ben Johnson Hints At Bigger Role For Bears Rookie

The Chicago Bears‘ offense was projected to be one of the most improved in the league this season.

Unfortunately, while there have been some signs of it in the early stages under head coach Ben Johnson, it has left plenty to be desired.

More than that, the fact that two of their top rookies have barely been on the field has been a bit of a head-scratcher.

Johnson recently said they could use wide receiver Luther Burden III more often.

“Luther is slowing gaining the trust. We are trying to get him more packages going forward,” Johnson said.

A second-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Burden was a constant talking point this offseason.

The coach was overly critical of him at times, but he also had plenty of praise for him once he was back to full strength after a hamstring injury.

He’s been on the field for 18 and 12 snaps, respectively, in the first two weeks of the regular season.

He had one catch for minus-3 yards in his NFL debut, and added one catch for five yards in Week 2.

He’s stuck behind Olamide Zaccheaus in the pecking order, as is rookie tight end Colston Loveland.

The Bears drafted Loveland in the first round ahead of Tyler Warren, who was considered the best tight end in the class, yet he’s barely been involved in Chicago’s passing game, with two catches on three targets for 12 yards.

The Bears clearly need to shake things up, and getting their promising rookies going might be the best way to do so.
