Arsenal opened this season's Champions League campaign with a big win in Spain.

Arsenal have created European Cup/Champions League history following their big win against Athletic Bilbao.

Arsenal opened their 2025/26 Champions League campaign with a victory over Bilbao on Tuesday.

Goals from second-half substitutes Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard ensured their victory at the Estadio de San Mames.

Martinelli opened the scoring in the 72nd minute after he ran through on goal before slotting past Unai Simon.

Trossard doubled his side's advantage three minutes from time after squeezing a shot into the back of the net.

Arsenal not only secured three points but also a piece of history.

They became the first side in European Cup/Champions League history to win six consecutive matches against Spanish teams.

Their win in Bilbao comes after back-to-back victories over Sevilla in the 2023/24 season and victories over Girona and Real Madrid last season.

The Gunners beat Sevilla home and away, including a 2-1 victory at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium.

Their impressive streak over Spanish opposition also includes a thumping 3-0 win over Real last season.

Declan Rice scored not one but two free-kicks to eliminate the La Liga giants from last season's Champions League campaign, winning the tie 5-1 on aggregate.

Arsenal resume their Champions League campaign against Olympiacos on October 1 and they have the chance to extend their record when they host Atletico Madrid on October 21.
