Trent Alexander-Arnold receives treatment for an injury during a Real Madrid game
Trent Alexander-Arnold went off injured just minutes into Real Madrid's first Champions League game of the season
Trent Alexander-Arnold suffered a nightmare Champions League debut for Real Madrid, coming off injured after just five minutes. Alexander-Arnold, who'd only started two of Madrid's opening four games in La Liga, felt his hamstring in the early stages of their Tuesday's clash with Marseille at the Bernabeu.
His participation in the game against his former side, Liverpool, in the in less than two months is now in real danger. Alexander-Arnold, 26, is due to return to for the first time since his acrimonious exit at the end of last season.
The match between two of the top seeds takes place on November 4.
Both sides will be hoping to qualify automatically, with Liverpool having topped the league phase last season.
There were two minutes and 40 seconds on the clock when Alexander-Arnold played a pass and immediately felt his right hamstring.
The right-back immediately sat down on the turf, signalling for treatment from Madrid's medical staff.
It soon became apparent that Alexander-Arnold wouldn't be able to continue.
The 26-year-old was replaced by Dani Carvajal, who started Saturday's 2-1 win away to Real Sociedad as Madrid continued their perfect start to the season.
Alexander-Arnold's injury could also hurt his chances of playing for England in the October and November international breaks.
The ex-Liverpool star missed out on Thomas Tuchel's squad earlier this month in what was arguably the England manager's biggest decision.
On his decision not to hand Alexander-Arnold or loanee Jack Grealish a call-up, Tuchel explained: "There's no doubt I am a big fan of Trent and Jack Grealish.
"Big players and big personalities, always in the mix.
"I know both are desperate but in this camp we decided for Reece James and Tino Livramento and in Jack's position, Rashy (Marcus Rashford) and Ebs (Eberechi Eze). The competition is up."
