The Tampa Bay Buccaneers certainly aren't skimping on the drama to start the 2025 season, as Baker Mayfield has led this team to a 2-0 start despite the fact that miracle comebacks were needed on both occasions to push them to an unblemished record.
After narrowly escaping the division rival Atlanta Falcons, Tampa needed every bit of Mayfield's excellence to take down CJ Stroud and the Houston Texans in a 20-19 thriller that raised the blood pressure of everyone in the Bay Area. Mayfield deserves oodles of credit, as his moxie helped lead a comeback.
With the Bucs getting the ball back after the two-minute warning and facing long odds of moving down the field, even the official NFL account had its doubts about Mayfield's ability to drive against a stout Texans defense. Mayfield proved them wrong, and the Bucs didn't wait long to respond.
The Bucs' account decided to poke fun at the league with a pithy "Yes" after their questioning of Mayfield's ability. After throwing five touchdowns in two games while leading the Bucs to two wins against very difficult opponents, it is no longer time to doubt Mayfield in these scenarios.
Buccaneers account jabs NFL after Baker Mayfield's comeback drive
The Bucs became the first team since the Brian Sipe-led 1979 Cleveland Browns to start the season 2-0 despite trailing in both games while entering the final minute. Those Browns, who finished 9-7 after a 7-3 start, had such a penchant for crazy comebacks that they were named the "Kardiac Kids."
The fact that Tampa has been doing this without many of its most impactful starters, including All-Pro left tackle Tristan Wirfs and wide receiver Chris Godwin, makes this victory even sweeter to savor. Imagine what this unit will look like when they are at full strength and Mayfield isn't under pressure every other play.
While the Bucs need to figure out a way to avoid getting in so many close games, as winning every one-score game is simply not a sustainable way to build a contending team, the fact that Mayfield has been tough as nails for so long should give this fanbase the confidence that another NFC South title is in the works.
