Ruben Amorim’s time at Manchester United has been a major disappointment so far. The Portuguese coach took the reins from former boss Erik ten Hag last season.

So far, though, he has failed to inspire an upturn in fortunes at Old Trafford. That has extended into the new campaign, with United sitting 14th in the Premier League table after just one win from their opening four games.

The Reds have already hit some new lows this term after being eliminated from the Carabao Cup from Grimsby Town, while they were recently torn apart in the Manchester derby.

So with pressure cranking up on Amorim, take a look at the latest developments surrounding his future.

Fresh Man Utd concerns

Manchester United chiefs have made their stance on Amorim very clear. The club retain faith in his abilities, albeit there are reportedly some growing concerns.

According to Mail Online, a few members of the first-team squad are losing faith in his methods. It is suggested that he is too wedded to his philosophy instead of trying to get results.

It has been reported that Man United would have to pay £12 million to Amorim in compensation should he get cut loose before his first anniversary in the Old Trafford hotseat.

Potential replacements named

While club chiefs are content to stick with Amorim as it stands, they have already been compiling a list of potential successors. As per the Mirror, Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner and Fulham chief Marco Silva have admirers.

Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola, former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino and ex-England manager Gareth Southgate are also reportedly in the running.

Amorim speaks out

Given United’s woeful start to the season, it’s natural that Amorim would be asked about his future. He has suggested that the final decision does not lie with him.

He said: "Guys, I understand that and I accept. It is not a record you should have in Manchester United. There are a lot of things - you have no idea what happened during these months - but I accept that. I am not going to change.

"When I want to change my philosophy, I will change. If not, you have to change the man. We will talk about that every game that we lose. I don't believe in that, in the system, or whatever. I believe in my way and I am going to play my way until I want to change.

"My message is that I am going to give everything. I will do everything, always thinking about what is best for the club. That was always the same message.

"It is not my decision, the rest (on whether United change manager). Until I am here, I will do my best. I really want to win games. I am suffering more than them."

Benfica deny links

Interestingly, Amorim has already been linked with a new job should he leave Old Trafford. Portuguese side Benfica are reportedly eyeing a move for him but the club’s presidential candidate João Noronha Lopes has denied that he is planning a move.

"Ruben Amorim? He's a great coach, he has a contract with Manchester United," Noronha Lopes told CMTV as reported by Record.

"He is a Benfica fan. Of course I like him. I don't have a contract for Ruben to sign. Bruno Lage will be Benfica's coach, naturally. I will work with him, as he is Benfica's coach. I will not be a factor in Benfica's instability."
