Bold Jalen Hurts prediction would torch alarming narrative on Eagles’ offense

The Philadelphia Eagles are off to a 2-0 start to the 2025 season.

It’s important to state the obvious when discussing the reigning Super Bowl champions, because you would think the sky is falling in Philly based on the state of the offense through two games.

The Eagles are breaking in a first-time offensive coordinator in Kevin Patullo this year, and some concerning trends have already emerged. Philadelphia led the NFL in rush play percentage in 2024 at 56%; through eight quarters this season, they’re rushing at an even higher clip — 60% of the time.

The problem is that the efficiency has been far worse. The Eagles are averaging just 3.9 yards per rush, which ranks 20th in the league. More alarming? As Brooks Kubena of The Athletic noted this week, Patullo is making it easy for defenses to guess what’s coming by exclusively rushing the football in certain formations.

Eagles coach Nick Sirianni last week: "You have no tendencies going into game one."

Through two games, they have a tendency to run when...

Under center: 96%

Pistol: 91.3%

Shotgun: 33.8%

All other NFL teams

Under center: 69.5%

Pistol: 62.7%

Shotgun: 26.9%

It’s a small sample size, and these numbers are skewed a bit by the Eagles running a ridiculous seven tush-push plays with quarterback Jalen Hurts against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2. But with A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith standing idly by, waiting patiently to be unleashed, it will be interesting to see how Patullo and head coach Nick Sirianni address some clear offensive tendencies entering their Week 3 showdown with the 2-0 Los Angeles Rams.

The Philadelphia Eagles’ passing game is primed for a Week 3 breakout

Hurts only cleared 250 passing yards four times last season, and none of them came in Philly’s four playoff wins. He hasn’t passed for three-plus touchdowns in a game since Week 17 of 2023.

Despite some historic numbers for Saquon Barkley against the Rams in 2024, Ryan Heckman of NFL Spin Zone predicts Philly’s rushing attack to take a back seat this week. Heckman has Hurts burning the Rams for 250 yards and three touchdowns through the air.

“Nick Sirianni is going to do things his way, and he's also the type of guy who would come out and make a point if he wanted to. In this case, Hurts flips the national narrative for just a moment.”

This definitely constitutes as a bold prediction, because the Rams could not tackle Barkley in the two meetings between these teams last season. Barkley rushed for a combined 460 yards and four touchdowns, and as a team, Philly rushed the ball on 76 of its 121 offensive plays against the Rams (62.8%).

The plot thickens here when you consider that the Rams have been the fourth stingiest defense in the NFL against the pass through two games.

With how the Eagles are rolling right now, they feel like a team that believes it can gain yards and win games even if their opponents know what’s coming. That may be true, but the stage is set for another run-heavy Eagles game plan this week, and that makes this the perfect time to pull the rug out and attack what could be a flat-footed Rams defense on Sunday.
