England international linked with a move away from Manchester United

Harry Maguire could be on his way out of Manchester United

Harry Maguire has been in the trenches at Old Trafford this season. The England international is yet to start one league game under Ruben Amorim since the commencement of the campaign. And the reports suggest that he would be considering his options once his contract at Old Trafford is due (which is next summer).

Most of what Maguire has got this season is playing from the bench as a late substitute. And if we are talking about this in numbers, then he has only had 41 minutes across those appearances. And this limited role isn’t sitting well with him.

Former scout explains Maguire exit situation

Harry Maguire could be on his way out of Manchester United.

Maguire has not been playing a lot in the ongoing campaign.

Now former United scout Mick Brown has given us more clarity around his situation at M16; he said (via. Football Insider):

“If he’s not starting games regularly, Maguire is going to look at his options. Amorim brings him on after 60 minutes either to shore things up or chase a result—but that’s not the job of a centre-half. If he’s seen as a difference-maker, then why isn’t he starting?”

Does Harry Maguire deserve a new contract at Manchester United?

Given that the World Cup is around the corner and United are not doing well, Maguire would be in quite a twirl about this lack of minutes. And this is the sort of thing that can end up costing Maguire his place in Thomas Tuchel’s squad. This alone can end up having him pushing out the door.

The Manchester Reds forked out a mega £80m fee to bring Maguire to M16 from Leicester City back in 2019. And then it did look like he would be a starting defender at Old Trafford for a long time to come. That did happen alongside the fact that he even wore the armband for United.

But then let’s be honest: his influence at Old Trafford has been decreasing over the past few seasons (and this despite that late-season resurgence under Amorim last year). It does look like Maguire is no longer part of the long-term plans at United.

We did see a lot of interest in his signatures in the recently concluded summer transfer window.

Author Opinion

United may need his presence in the squad. But the thing is, he has only a year remaining on his contract, and these petty minutes aren’t going to convince him a whole lot. So Maguire has the upper hand. There have been discussions about a new deal which hasn’t gone anywhere. And if a move away for him doesn’t materialise, then a free transfer for him next summer looks more like a growing opportunity.
