Veteran fullback Jakob Johnson was reverted to the Houston Texans' practice squad on Tuesday.
Fullback Jakob Johnson reverted back to the practice squad as part of a busy Tuesday for the Houston Texans.
The 30-year-old Johnson was a bright spot in Monday’s 20-19 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, blocking a fourth-quarter punt to set up a field goal by Ka’imi Fairbairn.
The Texans (0-2) will visit the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 3, still seeking their first win.
Johnson Was Key Contributor in Loss
The 6-foot-3, 255-pound Johnson had a sizable role in Week 2, playing 20 snaps on offense and another 10 snaps on special teams.
He didn’t record any stats besides the blocked punt but helped pave the way on Nick Chubb’s 25-yard touchdown run, which gave Houston a 19-14 lead with 2:10 remaining.
The Buccaneers answered on their next drive, with Rachaad White scoring on a 2-yard run with six seconds left to take the lead for good.
Johnson was also elevated from the practice squad in Week 1, when he played 15 snaps (seven on offense, eight on special teams) in a 14-9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.
Johnson Signed Free-Agent Deal in Offseason
Johnson is in his seventh NFL season, having also played for the New England Patriots (2019-21), Las Vegas Raiders (2022-23) and New York Giants (2024). In 72 career games, he has 19 catches for 105 yards and one touchdown.
He signed a one-year, $1.04 million deal free-agent deal with Houston in March.
The Texans released Johnson on Aug. 26 as part of their final roster cutdowns but re-signed him to the practice squad ahead of the opener.
In addition to fullback, Johnson also has served as the Texans’ No. 3 tight end behind Dalton Schultz and Harrison Bryant.
Texans Bring Back Veteran CB
The Texans made a few other moves Tuesday, including re-signing veteran cornerback Jalen Mills to their practice squad.
Like Johnson, Mills, 31, was with the team during training camp and the preseason before being cut in August.
Mills spent last season with the New York Jets, appearing in nine games (eight starts) before landing on season-ending injured reserve in December with a collarbone injury. He had 44 tackles, one interception and a forced fumble.
He’s also played for the Philadelphia Eagles (2016-20), where he overlapped with Texans defensive coordinator Matt Burke.
“Familiar with some of the guys on the staff, for sure, system as well coming from the Jets last year,” Mills said, via Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2. “It’s a little carryover here.”
