Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim's tenure hasn't gone to plan, but people around the club are quick to point out that their performance metrics are up, according to David Ornstein.
It's been a disappointing start to the 2025/2026 season, topped off by their Carabao Cup exit on penalties against League Two side Grimsby Town. In the Premier League, the Red Devils have won just once from four games, and that single victory was an unconvincing performance against newly promoted Burnley.
Last time out, United were defeated by rivals Manchester City by three goals to nil. Although a defeat was perhaps expected, the display produced by Amorim's side was the biggest disappointment. Amorim's insistence on not changing his system is beginning to frustrated supporters, with the Portuguese manager doubling down in the media.

Speaking on the Back Pages podcast, Ornstein has suggested that speaking to people around Manchester United, they are quick to point out that their performance metrics are up this season. The respecter reporter goes on to add that they aren't doing nearly enough, and their performances can't continue like this, but he doesn't expect them to change their manager as it stands...
"Well, it hasn't gone to plan is an understatement. Not even a year since he was appointed, and things are looking bleak again. It's a bit of a sense of Groundhog Day. When you speak to people around United, they're very keen and quick to point out that the performance metrics are up. There's a piece by Martin Samuel in The Times that sort of makes a bit of a mockery of that, because it's these results, it's putting the ball in the back of the net, and they're not doing that nearly enough. I think it's logical to understand that this can't continue. I don't know about a set number of games. I don't think United are minded to be changing manager again already."
There's no doubt Amorim's side will need to show vast improvement in recent weeks if the United manager is going to keep his job, but his position doesn't appear to be under threat at the moment. Whether that's the right decision remains to be seen, but it will be interesting to see if INEOS' stance changes if they fail to beat Chelsea, Sunderland and Brentford, who they will play over the next few weeks.
