Plenty of clubs across Europe – including those in the Premier League – were put on high alert recently when Turkish Super Lig outfit Fenerbahce decided to part ways with Jose Mourinho, who has enjoyed a managerial career envied by many. And now, just weeks after his premature dismissal, the Portuguese tactician is in 'advanced talks' with Benfica.

Mourinho – who is widely regarded as one of the best managers in world football – has endured success aplenty during his career in the dugout. He's managed the likes of Real Madrid, Chelsea (twice!), Manchester United and Inter Milan in a career that has seen him win two Champions Leagues and three Premier League crowns among other prizes.

And according to CNN Portugal, Benfica have reached an agreement in principle to make the serial-winning Mourinho, 62, their next manager. Fabrizio Romano, taking to X (formerly Twitter) has also reported that Benfica, who sit sixth in Liga Portugal after three wins and one draw from their first four matches, are interested in his services.

"BREAKING: Benfica are in advance talks with Jose Mourinho after Bruno Lage got sacked overnight. Understood Mourinho has opened doors to Benfica move as he wants to return to coaching immediately. The agreement could be sealed soon."

Benfica sacked Bruno Lage on Tuesday night just hours after their shock 3-2 defeat at home to Qarabag in the Champions League, and that could open the door for Mourinho to succeed the 49-year-old, who would relish the chance to manage in his homeland once again.
