Newcastle United supporters would welcome Tino Asprilla to St James’ Park with open arms against Barcelona on Thursday.
Newcastle United have reportedly invited Tino Asprilla to St James’ Park on Thursday for the epic Champions League opener.
Should the Colombian accept, a familiar face awaits in Barcelona - the La Liga giants he put to the sword in September 1997. Ironically, today marks the 28th anniversary of Asprilla’s stunning hat-trick that remains a key chapter in Newcastle’s folklore.
Asprilla’s time on Tyneside was blighted by inconsistency and off-field drama which, in truth, only added to his appeal. Barcelona heroics aside, the now 55-year-old fared better at European level, scoring nine goals in 11 games.
Tino Asprilla invited to Barcelona game
The Sun report that Asprilla has been invited as a guest for the mouth-watering clash with the Catalans. His attendance would only add to the nostalgia that has grown since the fixture list was released two weeks ago.
The piece notes how Asprilla is doing all he can to make the trip in time for Thursday’s game. A raucous Newcastle crowd is anticipated as Eddie Howe’s men get their Champions League campaign underway against one of the tournament favourites.
Newcastle United love remains
Speaking at an event in Gosforth 12 years ago, Asprilla revealed his love for Newcastle is everlasting. He said: “People seem to like seeing me back and they like to hear the stories that I left behind in Newcastle.
“All the places I have lived will always be a part of my life and it’s always good to go back. I think all the fans of Newcastle are very loyal and they seem to like most of the players that come. However, it’s great to know I left something for them to remember me by.”
