FC Barcelona transfer news round-up plus Rashford update

FC Barcelona have finished its transfer business for the summer of 2025, a window the club would want as far away from its memory as possible. The club’s financial position is not desirable and has severely hampered the Catalan giants’ outing in the transfer market.

Barcelona ended the previous campaign with two domestic trophies in La Liga and Copa del Rey. Hansi Flick would have been thrilled about the prospect of adding Niko Williams to his squad, but the deal never materialised between Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao.

Flick decided that the next best option was Marcus Rashford which suited all parties as playing for Barca was widely known to be the England winger’s dream club and Man United wanted to move the winger on from Old Trafford.

Rashford registered his first assist for Barca in the recent 6-0 win over Valencia, laying on the goal for ex Leeds United man Raphinha. Whether Rashford can make his mark in La Liga remains to be seen. There were numerous media reports suggesting Barca were willing to pay £3.5million to return the winger to United but nothing of that nature has materialised yet.

The Catalans were not able to assert their dominance in the transfer market, and the continuous delays in the renovation of the Camp Nou only made matters worse. The club were also cornered into providing the marching orders for several players to adhere to La Liga’s strict financial fair play rules. At Essential Football, we have briefly summarised Barcelona’s outing in the transfer window ahead of a big season with Champions League football about to begin.

Barcelona arrivals

Joan Garcia was the Spanish team’s marquee summer signing and cost £22 million following his arrival from cross-town rivals, Espanyol. The shotstopper is considered to be a long-term successor to Marc-Andre Ter Stegen by Barcelona’s management.

The goalkeeper has impressed in his opening few matches, establishing himself at the top of Flick’s pecking order. As mentioned out of favour Manchester United star Marcus Rashford has also joined Barcelona following failed talks for the signature of Niko Williams. The winger arrives on a season-long loan move and could be made permanent at the end of the deal after Aston Villa declined to make their loan from last season of Rashford a permanent deal.

Barcelona departures

Barcelona were compelled to release players from their team in order to stand a chance of signing new players. It was essential for the Catalan side to free up the wage bill in order to comply with the FFP rules in Spain. Inigo Martinez has now embarked on a new chapter in his career and will reap the rewards of his loyal service in La Liga with a hefty contract in the Saudi league with Al-Nassr.

Central defender, Clement Lenglet, has completed his permanent transfer to Atletico Madrid after spending the last couple of years of his Barcelona contract on loan at various clubs. Pau Victor and Fransico Trincao were allowed to leave the squad and have now joined their new teams in SC Braga and Sporting CP, respectively. Prominent first-team features like Inaki Pena and Ansu Fati left the club on loan deals.

Hansi Flick might not have been provided with all the necessary tools due to Barcelona’s poor financial state. However, the club has displayed in the past its ability to bounce back from tricky situations and emerge victorious. Barcelona have started the season decently with two victories from their opening three games in the Spanish Primera Division.
