Arsenal opened their Champions League campaign with a determined 2-0 win over Athletic Club at the intimidating San Mames Stadium, with defender Jurrien Timber quick to credit the team’s collective defensive effort for securing a clean sheet and three crucial points.

The Gunners held firm against a raucous crowd in Bilbao, often described as a “Cauldron of Noise,” and extended their tally to four clean sheets this season. The breakthrough came in the second half when substitutes Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard made the difference. Martinelli struck just seconds after his introduction, latching onto Trossard’s clever flick before finishing calmly, while the Belgian capped the win with a decisive strike in the 86th minute.

Speaking after the match, Timber underlined that Arsenal’s success was a team effort. “It’s not just the defence, also David [Raya] of course and the whole team,” he said. “I think it was an amazing effort while we were defending. The standards are really high, which is amazing to see. It’s a privilege to be a part of.”

The Dutchman also stressed the importance of starting strong in Europe’s elite competition, recalling the fine margins from last season. “I think we’ve seen it last year – every point counts,” he noted. “To start here with three points is amazing. Now it’s about rest, recovery, and getting ready for a big game on Sunday at home.”

Timber praised the impact of Arsenal’s substitutes, pointing to the squad’s depth as a decisive factor. Martinelli’s goal was his first of the season, while Trossard both created and finished chances to seal victory.

“They looked happy, and they did amazing,” Timber said. “We have a deep squad, a great squad, so when players come on and make a difference like this, it’s going to really help us this season.”

He reserved special recognition for the match-winners: “It’s the first Champions League win, which is very important. It’s not easy coming here, as you could see. It was a tough one, but we got the three points. Big credit to Martinelli and Trossard – they did amazing.”

The result not only strengthens Arsenal’s European ambitions but also boosts momentum ahead of their upcoming Premier League showdown at the Emirates. With defensive stability and attacking firepower off the bench, Mikel Arteta’s side looks well-equipped for another strong campaign at home and abroad.
