With the draw for the UEFA Women’s Champions League league phase taking place at 11am UK time on Friday, let’s take a look at which teams we could come up against.
As the competition’s titleholders, we’re one of nine teams that are entering the league phase directly, the other eight being Lyon, PSG, Bayern Munich, Wolfsburg, Barcelona, Chelsea, Benfica and Juventus.
The other nine clubs will be determined by Thursday’s third qualifying round winners. The first legs of those matches took place last week, and the teams who are currently ahead on aggregate are Valerenga, OH Leuven, St. Polten, Twente, Brann, Real Madrid and Sporting CP. The ties between BK Hacken and Atletico Madrid as well Paris FC and Austria Wien are currently level.
The teams looking to come from behind to reach the league phase are Ferencvaros, Vorskla Poltava, Fortuna Hjorring, GKS Katowice, Manchester United, Eintracht Frankfurt and Roma.
Once qualified, the 18 clubs are divided into three pots of six clubs. The pots are composed according to the club coefficient rankings established at the beginning of the season and with ourselves being the top seed in pot 1.
The opponents of each team, as well as whether each match is played at home or away, are determined by means of a draw. Each team is drawn against two opponents from each of the three pots and plays one opponent from each pot at home, and the other away.
In principle, teams from the same association cannot be drawn against each other and each team may play against a maximum of two opponents from any other one association.
We will also find out which of our ties will be home and which will be away. The matches are currently set to take place across the following dates.
Matchday 1: 7/8 October
Matchday 2: 15/16 October
Matchday 3: 11/12 November
Matchday 4: 19/20 November
Matchday 5: 9/10 December
Matchday 6: 17 December
