Forest's B Team suffered a narrow defeat to Braintree Town in their second National League Cup group stage fixture on Tuesday night.

Chay Cooper's ninth-minute strike proved to be the game's only goal, on a night where a youthful side consisting of two 16-year-olds and a 17-year-old started against a competitive National League outfit.

Braintree took the lead when Sahid Kamara's effort was saved but only parried as far as Cooper who swept home from close-range for 1-0.

Forest looked for an immediate response and nearly found it when Archie Whitehall's low cross took a deflection and nearly caught out Braintree goalkeeper Mason Terry at his near post.

Braintree had another good chance of their own on the half hour when Freddie Hockey pounced on a defensive error before volleying just off target from 20 yards.

HALF TIME: Braintree 1-0 Forest

Forest pushed for a leveller in the second half, as Fuad Smith drove into the box and flashed an effort across goal and just wide of the far post.

Justin Hanks then tried his luck from distance and saw an effort tipped over the crossbar by Terry.

As Forest pushed, Braintree looked to hit the Reds on the counter. Fletcher Hubbard slipped Hockey through on goal, but Luke Campbell made a fine save to deny the attacker one-on-one.

Despite late pressure, Forest were unable to find a late equaliser. Next up for the Reds is a trip to the Mornflake Stadium to face Stoke City on Monday night.

FULL TIME: Braintree 1-0 Forest
